The Fitting Room
An Interview Process
Tina and Molly, two college roommates, went shopping for a new blouse for Tina. Her boyfriend had asked her to a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner and she wanted to look perfect.
“I’m not sure how I feel about this one,” Tina said, walking out of the fitting room. “What do you think?”
“It’s nice,” Molly told her, examining the deep blue shirt.
“I just don’t know,” Tina mumbled, biting her lip.
“Well, if you don’t love it here, you won’t like it anymore at home,” pointed out Molly.
The reason companies perform interviews is the same reason clothing stores have fitting rooms, to try it before you buy it. What’s true about this story is true about interviewing as well. If you don’t get excited about an interview as a candidate or excited by a prospective employee as a hiring authority, the chances are it’s not a good fit.
There is nothing worse than investing time and money in something only to discover it is not what you really needed or thought you were going to get. Just like Tina wanted to see what she would look like in the blouse, individuals want to see if the company is going to be a good fit and organizations want to find out if a candidate is a feasible option.
