Nāga Fireballs

Late in the month of October, Nāga Fireballs fill the sky over the Mekong River in Thailand like shooting stars. Interestingly, this occurrence usually aligns with the very end of the three-month-long Buddhist event of Vassa. These fireballs are named for the Nāga, a half-serpent, half-human creature said to inhabit the waters of the Mekong.

While the phenomenon has been going on for hundreds of years, scientists have no explanation. Some theorize that the marshy environment of the river is releasing phosphine gas, which is flammable. Others state that the fireballs are a result of plasma, gaseous matter that has undergone some amount of ionization.
Despite the mystery surrounding them, locals enjoy watching the Nāga Fireballs light up the night year after year.
