During the mid-2000s in South Korea, the population developed an unusual fear: electric fans. An urban legend began circulating that being in a room with all the windows and doors shut while an electric fan was running could result in nausea, paralysis, asphyxiation, and death.

Even though there was zero evidence to support this, the phobia held strong for many years and even made its way to parts of Japan. One conspiracy theorist suggested that the rumor was started by the Korean government to lower energy consumption.
