Sailing Stones

In Death Valley National Park it is possible for rocks to move across the ground even when no one has touched them. Now, you might be thinking this doesn’t sound like anything special, however, some of these rocks weigh hundreds of pounds!

The most common place to witness the aftermath of the sailing stones is a dried-up lake located on the northwestern side of Death Valley, which has been dubbed “The Racetrack Playa”. With a surface of dried clay and an area of 70 square miles, there are tracks everywhere showing the passage of the rocks.
This phenomenon stumped scientists for a long time, as they simply couldn’t understand how the wind could be moving such giant pieces of stone. While there are still some questions surrounding the mystery, most believe the answer is ice. When temperatures drop, a thin layer of ice forms beneath the rocks creating a frictionless surface on which the stones can be blown around with ease.
