Will-O’-The-Wisps

As the Scottish legend goes, will-o’-the-wisps are the souls of the lost who could enter neither heaven nor hell and must wander the earth for all eternity. These souls are given a light, sometimes a jack-o’-lantern,  which can be seen in swamps and marshes. It is said that following these lights will lead either to great treasure or to disaster.

While few still believe the fairy tales surrounding will-o’-the-wisps, the lights that conjured the legends can still be observed today. Scientists call them swamp lights and believe the phenomenon is caused by natural gases released from the decay of organic matter. This mystery is not quite solved, though, as the swamp lights are spontaneous and hard to predict.
