Asteroids

Even though there are nearly a million and a half identified asteroids, it is doubtful that most people can name even one. Asteroids are considered minor planets, objects in space that aren’t real planets, but also aren’t comets or meteoroids. While the term asteroids is used broadly, as there is no official definition, nearly all are composed of rock, metals, or ice.

With names such as 253 Mathilde, 433 Eros, and 243 Ida, the majority of the asteroids in our solar system can be found in orbit between Jupiter and Mars. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes, some circular, some oblong, and some bulbous. On their own, these asteroids are unremarkable, but together, they are referred to as the Main Belt, which is a name most people recognize.
