Sheep are generally passive creatures who prefer to spend their days grazing in a pasture. However, on Nov 3rd, 1888, around 8pm, thousands of sheep across the 200 square miles of Oxfordshire, England, all decided to panic. Due to their terror, many flocks fled their pens and had to be tracked down from different parts of the county.

No one ever determined what could have caused this strange phenomenon. Later, it was stipulated that, instead of the panic being the product of something like an explosion, which would have been noticed by local farmers, a small event may have occurred, spooking only a few sheep. Since sheep are herd animals, the frightened creatures could have spread their fear to the others in their flock and then onto another flock, and so on until the whole countryside was in an uproar.
