According to myth, if you see a group of mushrooms sprouting in a circle, you have found a fairy ring. There are many beliefs surrounding these naturally occurring growths. In ancient folklore, fairy rings were seen as places that could lead to danger and misfortune. Today, the urban legends focus more on whimsy and the promise of adventure.

But where do fairy rings actually come from? The answer is simpler than you might believe: a network. Mushrooms tend to grow where there is organic, decaying matter, such as fallen leaves and rotting wood. After sprouting, an individual mushroom will not last long, but the mycelium, an underground fungi network similar to the roots of a plant, can live for years.

As long as there is something to feed on, the mycelium will continue to send up mushrooms. Sometimes, the matter is consumed from the center outward, thus the mushrooms will appear in the shape of a circle, giving us a fairy ring as the network grows larger and larger.
