Fair Charlotte

The story from 1840 goes that a young woman, Charlotte, was invited to a New Year’s ball. After taking hours to do her hair, arrange her dress, and paint her face, she steps into a sleigh, ready to ride to the party. Despite the fact that it is quite cold out, Charlotte refuses to wear a shawl or coat of any kind, afraid that it will rumple her appearance. As a result, when she arrives at the ball, the other guests find her frozen stiff and lifeless.

While this is more of a cautionary tale than an urban legend, it is definitely a moral lesson on vanity and the importance of being prepared. In the story, Charlotte puts so much effort into what she looks like on the outside that she doesn’t notice what is going on around her.
In the corporate world, it should be the other way around. The best organizations focus on helping their employees hone their skills and grow professionally. They encourage networking opportunities and CE courses. With this kind of support, their employees are able to improve not just themselves, but their teams and the company as a whole from the inside out.
