While everyone has heard of a sea serpent, it is a broad title used in mythology and in urban legends for a wide variety of marine animals. Many of these animals are real, others are known to be myth, and some, scientists are still searching for.

One of these is the cadborosaurus, which is said to resemble a serpent with multiple, vertical coils and to have a horse-like head. Alleged sightings have mostly been reported in the ocean waters around Alaska and Canada, but no other evidence of the creature’s existence has ever been found. Some of the animals mistaken for a cadborosaurus are whalebone whales, elephant seals, oarfish, sea lions, and humpbacked whales. Despite their lack of success, scientists have not given up their search and continue to test likely specimens in hopes of finding hard evidence.
