The Black Stain

La Mancha Negra, or The Black Stain, refers to a phenomenon where an unidentified ooze is secreted from the roads in Venezuela. Initially discovered in 1986, the blob quickly spread until it spanned eight miles of asphalt. Ever since, it has been a recurring problem, creating slippery and, in one case, fatal conditions for drivers.

The substance is described as thick and greasy, with the consistency of chewing gum. Despite years of study and millions of dollars spent to discover the cause, the ooze remains a mystery. While most believe it to be the result of cars leaking various fluids on the roadway, that theory has yet to be confirmed.
The problem also seems unfixable as The Black Stain cannot be washed away, scrubbed away, or dried out. Local government agencies have also tried demolishing roads and rebuilding them. However, the stain always returns.

The Black Stain is a lot like an organization with a bad company culture. On the surface, everything may look all right, but eventually the ooze will start to seep out, spreading to everyone it touches.
