Mausoleum
One of the lesser-known Wonders of the Ancient World is The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus also called the Tomb of Mausolus. It stood almost 150 feet tall and was covered on all sides by sculptural reliefs. In addition, The Mausoleum boasted over 400 additional, free-standing statues. As far as final resting places go, it was one of the most intricate ever created.
Upon their deaths, Mausolus, the ruler of Carian, and his wife, Artemisia, were entombed in The Mausoleum. It is speculated that Mausolus spent many years before his death designing the burial site and took inspiration from the monumental graves he saw in Lycia. All of his careful preparation resulted in an incredible feat of architectural engineering, which stood for over a millennium.
