Nebula
The birthplace of a star is called a nebula. It is a vast cloud in space composed of hydrogen and cosmic dust, which is the remains of a dead star. Eventually, these particles will converge and a new star, or even stars, will form. This occurrence is rare and takes thousands of years to complete its cycle.
Claudius Ptolemy, an Alexandrian mathematician and astronomer, was the first to record the formation of new stars in 150 AD when he noted not just one, but five new stars in the nighttime sky. He was also the first person to discover the existence of a nebula. Since his time, hundreds of newly created stars have been observed, with our galaxy alone producing about 7 each year.
While there are a few nebulas that can be seen with the naked eye, most require a telescope to view. Notable for their appearance, nebulas often resemble the clouds that occur in Earth’s atmosphere. They also come in a wide variety of colors and sizes, some appearing as pillars, hoops, or spheres and boasting names such as The Cat’s Eye, The Horsehead, and The Southern Ring.
All and all, Nebulas are special places, not just for their unique and beautiful appearances, but because of what they can create.
