Between the 1960s and the 1970s, there was an urban legend in Poland about vampires who kidnapped people. Supposedly, they were especially fond of children and would drive around in black limousines, jumping out to grab their prey before speeding away.

Crazily enough, the rumors turned out to be true. (Except not the vampire part.) It was actually the Polish secret police who were behind both the kidnappings and the mystery surrounding them. They thought if the urban legend became popular enough, no one would believe any witnesses who saw them abducting their targets.
