Nearly every person I know has put a seashell to their ear and listened to the ocean. As children, it seemed like the larger the shell, the closer the water felt. While it may have been years ago, I’m sure you can still remember imagining the waves on the beach as you listened to the ocean’s call.

However, poetic as it sounds, this is just an urban legend. What you are actually hearing is resonant soundwaves from ambient noises nearby. These sounds reverberate inside the cavity of the shell, producing the roar of the waves on the sand. What’s more, it has been speculated that the very presence of the seashell itself is what suggests to our minds that we are hearing the ocean, or just that we need a vacation.
