Lighthouse
The oldest of its kind, The Lighthouse of Alexandria, stood for over 1,500 years and is one of The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was commissioned by King Ptolemy I, who succeeded Alexander the Great, and was completed under the reign of his son, King Ptolemy II.
After a series of earthquakes, The Lighthouse of Alexandria was damaged beyond repair and abandoned. Its ruins were discovered in 1968 and, in 1994, the scattered remains were first photographed with an underwater camera.
Since being first built by the ancient Egyptians, lighthouses have been guiding ships to safe harbor for the past two thousand years. They were generally set on rocky cliffs and topped with brilliant lights to warn vessels of the dangers ahead. Especially during storms, lighthouses have saved thousands of lives and helped sailors and passengers reach shore unscathed.
