In Forest Park, Illinois, there is a cemetery where nearly 750 circus performers have been laid to rest. The first to be buried there in 1918 were the casualties of a train wreck involving the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus. The fifty-plus victims were placed together in a mass grave. Among the deceased were Arthur Dierckx and Max Nietzborn, part of “The Great Dierckx Brothers”, and Jennie Ward Todd, a famous aerialist. Around the grave site, five statues of elephants were constructed.

For the last century, hundreds of other circus performers have been buried close by, expanding the plot, dubbed “The Showman’s Rest”. According to local urban legend, at night, the trumpeting of elephants can be heard throughout the cemetery, heralding the presence of a spectral circus.

This paints a beautiful image of the deceased performers continuing the art they loved so much. They say that when you love what you do, you don’t work a day in your life, and I’d be willing to bet that’s how these entertainers felt about their craft.
