All seven of The Wonders of the Ancient World have crumbled into dust or fallen into ruin, save one, The Great Pyramid of Giza. It has stood for over four and a half millennia and is composed of more than two million stone blocks weighing a combined total of around six million tons. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, the pyramid, standing a little under five hundred feet tall, held the record for being the tallest man-made structure in the world for nearly four thousand years.

The Great Pyramid was constructed as a final resting place for Khufu, a pharaoh from Egypt’s fourth dynasty. Despite having commissioned one of the longest-standing monuments ever built, very little is known about Khufu and his reign. Nearly all that has been discovered about him comes from the pyramid itself and the necropolis, an ancient graveyard, where many of his family and court were buried.

Despite this, his name and pyramid will most likely never be forgotten. What was Khufu’s secret to gaining this kind of immortality? It was the pyramid’s strong foundation of stone. This gave it the ability to withstand all kinds of natural disasters, which were the downfall of most of the other wonders.
